After a surgery to clear

a lifetime of bacon and eggs

from aging arteries

my anesthesia-drunk grandfather

wanted to share

his Doctor’s graffiti 

with his wife and daughter

So he whipped off

his post-op bed sheet

to reveal

not just the Doctor’s work

but Nature’s as well

with not even a thin, hospital johnny

to act as treasure chest

for his family jewels

My grandmother created

new shades of red

My mother

turned to her mother

and said

“So

that’s

why

you

stayed

with

him

all

these

years”
