Herself

Spells spoken in her ear
God's word carved in her soul
Fairy dust sparkling in her eyes

It's no wonder her heart couldn't speak
as she'd already been rendered
deaf, dumb, and blind

Never taught to think

Trained to obey

A woman's body with a child brain
a stunted emotional range
and a Disney view on romance

The ugly duckling
she'd open her heart and legs for anyone
believing attention meant he saw the swan inside
hoping for an open heart in return

There were of course
no Princes
only
empty Charming

As she rarely left her childhood home
which had transformed to her middle-aged dungeon
there were only a few
but it does not take many to empty someone
who didn't realize she wasn't whole

She woke herself up just after the half century mark

Time was most definitely not her friend

Her thoughts

Her love

Her humanity

So much work undone

So few days ahead

With her body beginning its inevitable change as midnight approached
energy must be focused and well spent

No prayers

No magic

No societal accepted nonsense

Just reality

The honest pain
in finding
in creating
the one thing too long left uncreated
buried under the planted poison beliefs that had strangled her
season over season

The one thing she should've been loving all along

Herself
